About me

Clinical experience shaped by lived experience.

I’m a Licensed Professional Counselor and National Certified Counselor with more than 10 years of experience in mental health. My professional work is also informed by personal experience with trauma, addiction, and recovery, giving me a firsthand appreciation for how difficult—and how personal—the process of change can be.

My experience

A broad background in counseling and mental health.

Throughout my career, I’ve worked in several different areas of counseling, including substance use treatment, crisis intervention, and community mental health. I’ve worked as a drug court therapist, provided in-home counseling to individuals and families, and developed and directed counseling programs.

These experiences have allowed me to work with people from different backgrounds who are dealing with a wide range of challenges.

My interest in counseling also grows out of my own personal struggles and experiences with trauma, addiction, and recovery. I understand how difficult it can be to confront painful experiences, change familiar ways of coping, and begin building a different life.

I also understand that trauma can affect how people see themselves, relate to others, and respond to stress. Addiction and other coping strategies often develop within a larger life story, and meaningful recovery rarely follows a simple or predictable path.

I believe this perspective, along with my professional training and experience, helps me connect with clients and better understand some of what they’re going through.

My approach

Comfortable, collaborative, practical, and informed by lived experience.

My approach to counseling is pretty straightforward. I want clients to feel comfortable talking openly about what’s going on in their lives without feeling judged.

I don’t believe counseling needs to be overly formal or complicated. I work collaboratively with clients to understand their concerns, identify patterns that may be contributing to their difficulties, and develop practical ways to address them.

My personal experiences with trauma, addiction, and recovery remind me that people are more than what has happened to them or the ways they learned to cope. I try to bring that understanding into the counseling relationship through empathy, honesty, respect, and hope.

I use several therapeutic approaches, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), mindfulness, motivational interviewing, and EMDR. My approach depends on the individual and what we’re working on together.

My specialties and experience include working with adults dealing with substance use and recovery, trauma, anxiety, depression, and men’s mental health concerns.

Whether you’re struggling with something that’s been going on for years or dealing with a more recent change in your life, counseling can be an opportunity to gain some perspective, develop healthier ways of coping, and work toward the changes you’d like to make.
